Lightning bolt kills four members of same family

A bolt of lightning has killed four members of the same family in Poland.

The group were reported missing last week - after they failed to return from a hiking trip.

A rescue operation was launched and last night the bodies of a 50-year-old man and woman from Warsaw, were found, along with the remains of their 22 year old daughter and her fiancé.

Witnesses said an unusually violent thunderstorm - punctuated by multiple lightning strikes - had raged in the area where the bodies were found.

Authorities say it is extremely rare for a single bolt of lightning to kill four people an investigation has been launched to establish the exact cause of their deaths.

Australians told to pay $5,000 - or face death

Thousands of Australians have been stunned to receive a death threat text demanding they pay $5,000 Australian dollars to stay alive.

A number of people have fallen for the scam, which tells people they will be murdered if they don't send the money on - and police have been shocked by the scale of the con.

The message reads: "Sum1 paid me to kill you. Get spared, 48hrs to pay $5000. If you inform the police or anybody, death is promised. (sic)"

But police have warned people not to reply to the text and to delete it immediately.

Speaking at a press conference at Queensland, Brian Hay, Queensland Detective Superintendent, said: “Do not respond. Delete it immediately and don’t panic … because that’s what they prey upon.”

Syrian rebels brace for showdown in Aleppo

Are you in Syria? Share your stories, videos and photos with the world on CNN iReport.
(CNN) -- Leaders of Syrian rebel forces ordered their fighters to attack hundreds of government troops heading toward Aleppo, the country's largest city, a Free Syrian Army official told CNN on Wednesday.
The Syrian regime withdrew about 2,000 fully equipped troops, along with their tanks and artillery, from Idlib and sent them to Aleppo, the official said.
As the commercial hub of Syria, Aleppo is a crucial city in the country's 16-month conflict. If rebels eventually gain control of the city it would mark a pivotal point in the Syrian crisis and deal a heavy blow to President Bashar al-Assad's financial ties.

Across Syria, at least 50 people were killed in fresh violence Wednesday, opposition activists said. The dead included six people in Aleppo and six children, the Local Coordination Committees of Syria said.
Rebel forces have been trying to wrest control of Aleppo from government forces.
"There is random shelling of the eastern portion of the city as the Syrian Army is trying to force out the FSA (Free Syrian Army). They are hitting civilian homes over and over," one activist told CNN via Skype.
CNN's Ivan Watson, who is inside Syria, said he had noticed the rebels had become better armed in the past few months. While they only had shotguns at one point, they now have rocket-propelled grenades and assault rifles, he said.
The increased firepower has helped the rebels successfully attack armored vehicles and force some Syrian forces to resupply by helicopter.
Watson said that in the village he was in, hundreds of rebels had loaded up with ammunition this week and headed to fight in Aleppo.

250 foetuses found in vats in Russian forest.

A GROUP of Russians have stumbled across hundreds of embryos and foetuses stashed in four huge vats while taking a weekend stroll through woods.
The 50-litre containers of formaldehyde in the woods of the industrial Ural Mountains region contained 248 embryos and foetuses in all, the police said.
The four strollers noticed the contents because some of the lids to the vats had popped open when they were dropped and some of the embryos had spilled to the ground.
A spokesman for the regional police said the embryos appeared to have been illegally dropped off by a local hospital that treated biological waste for four nearby medical facilities.

Rhonda Washington Allegedly Stabs Husband Over Facebook Post

Rhonda Washington and her husband agree on one thing: She stabbed him during a fight.
However, they can't agree on whether it was because she was mad that he was high on PCP (her story) or that she didn't like a post on his Facebook page (his allegation).
Regardless of who's right, Washington, 33, of Bryan, Texas, was arrested Thursday morning on a felony charge after police said she stabbed her husband with a knife,The Eagle reported.
Washington allegedly told authorities that her husband, whose name has not been released, was high on PCP when they got into an argument about his drug use at their home. She said when things got physical, she jabbed him in the hand with her keys.
However, police told KWTX-TV that the husband did not appear to be intoxicated.
The husband claims his wife stabbed him in the hand with a knife after becoming upset about something on his Facebook page, The New York Daily News reported.
Washington was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Naturist ex-Marine walks free from prison

A former marine who refuses to wear clothes has been freed after six years of imprisonment.

Stephen Gough – who is known as the Naked Rambler - spent 657 days in jail after previously being stopped walking out of Perth Prison at the end of another sentence in the nude.

Despite being set free again this time, he still walked out of jail with no clothes on as police appeared to turn a blind eye to the 53-year-old naturist's behaviour.

Speaking outside Perth Prison, he said: "I’m not going to give up. Stay naked is the word.

“My opinion is that the police have thought, ‘The guy’s not going to give up, so let’s have a think about it’.

"Something has changed and it is good news for me. It’s nice to be standing here feeling the breeze. I haven’t been outside a building in six years.”

US Approves First Drug to Reduce Risk of HIV Infection

U.S. officials have approved what they call the first drug on the market that reduces the risk of HIV infection in those who are free of the virus that causes AIDS.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Monday that the drug Truvada now can be used daily in combination with safer sex practices to reduce the risk of sexually-acquired HIV infection in adults at high risk.

In a statement, FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said the approval marks an important milestone in the fight against HIV. She added that every year, about 50,000 U.S. adults and adolescents are diagnosed with the infection.

The FDA previously approved Truvada to be used in combination with other antiretroviral agents to treat HIV-infected adults and children 12 years and older.

Airport couple arrested over baby in bag

An Egyptian couple tried to smuggle a newborn baby through an airport scanner in a holdall.

The parents decided to put the boy in the bag in an attempt to get him into the United Arab Emirates after he was refused entry at Sharjah International Airport because he didn't have a visa.

Security officials were stunned when they spotted the little one – who was put in danger after being exposed to radiation in the X-ray machine – in the holdall, and his parents were immediately arrested and charged with endangering the baby's life.

A Sharjah police spokesman said: “They were risking the life of the baby. They said in an interrogation they had resorted to sneaking him through inside a bag because he did not have a passport or visa and they wanted to have him with them in the UAE.”

Crazy Ride- A must watch.

A DRIVER who rammed into a pedestrian, drove with him through crowded streets, left him clinging to her bonnet and blamed her hormones for the incident has been jailed.

Suzanne Gilchrist, 37, carried 22-year-old Stuart Morris along on her Vauxhall Corsa for about 300m after driving into him as she tried to escape from a store detective.

CCTV footage shows how she had put Mr Morris’s life in danger, a court heard.

Emma White, prosecuting, said the incident began with the mother-of-one trying to get away from the security officer at the Howgate Shopping Centre in Falkirk, Scotland, at about 4pm.

She drove away as the guard, Lorne Stevenson, tried to open her driver’s door and snatch her keys from the ignition.

Mr Stevenson was trying to speak to her about an alleged theft from a Boots shop.

Miss White said Gilchrist drove towards him and struck him, causing him jump onto the bonnet to avoid being hurt.

She then drove off "at speed" through a series of streets, weaving from side to side.

Miss White said: "She was driving really fast, swerving over the road, and trying to force him off the bonnet.

"Her wheels were spinning as she turned from Manor St into Princes St in the town centre and she never even tried to stop at the junction.

"He said she was 'screeching over the road trying to get him to fall off'.

"The roads were being used by other members of the public and vehicles during the course of the incident."

Miss White said the whole incident was captured on town centre CCTV, which she played to the court. The footage featured close-ups of Mr Morris clinging onto the bonnet.

The depute fiscal said the incident came to an end when Gilchrist was held up by other traffic at lights and "had no option other than to come to a halt".

Mr Morris is then seen to stand up on the bonnet of the car and kick the windscreen to try to smash it so Gilchrist could not continue.

Miss White said he later told police he had done so "because he was scared, and his adrenaline was going".
Mr Stevenson, who had been following on foot, ran up and tried to open the car door, but Gilchrist slammed it closed.

Miss White said: "The lights then turned green and she again tried to drive off with Mr Morris still on the bonnet. Mr Stevenson then managed to force open the door and after a struggle managed to switch off the ignition."

Police arrived and Gilchrist was arrested.

Mr Morris, "plainly overcome", told officers he "thought he was a goner".

He was taken to hospital on a spinal board, and found to have spinal bruising, and bruising to his legs and fingers. He was given painkillers and discharged.

Miss White said: "The total distance driven by the accused while he was on the bonnet was 285m."

Gilchrist, from Edinburgh, pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Morris, failing to give way at junctions, and trying to throw him from her car to the danger of his life on June 12 last year.

Her plea of not guilty to stealing a bottle of aftershave was accepted.

Rhona McLeod, mitigating, said Gilchrist had "believed herself to be in danger".

She said: "She had thought that she was pregnant and was obviously suffering from some sort of hormonal imbalance, and was on such a knife-edge that she panicked.

"She was hysterical. She thought Mr Morris had walked out in front of her trying to make her stop. She extends to him her unreserved apology."

She added that Gilchrist was in employment, and had a 16-year-old daughter, currently in the middle of exams.

Sheriff Wyllie Robertson jailed Gilchrist for four years and three months.

He said: "You deliberately drove at the victim, who was innocently crossing the road, and he was forced to jump on the bonnet for fear of being run over.

"Your car was screeching around corners, while this man feared for his life. The danger to his life was real and obvious, and there is no alternative to a custodial sentence."

Mr Morris, a builder’s labourer, said Gilchrist deserved a jail term.

"I had just come out of McDonalds after getting a burger," Mr Morris said. "I saw her arguing with the security guard, and the next thing as I crossed the road - bang she hit me.

"I had to cling onto the top edge of the bonnet for dear life. She was zig-zagging trying to throw me off.

"If it’d been a child she hit, the child would have been killed, as they wouldn’t have been able to hang on.

"She was crazy. When my girlfriend gets hormonal, she just shouts a bit, she doesn’t try to kill anyone.

"It was quite scary. Gilchrist only stopped in the end because I smashed her windscreen.

"She deserves the jail - no-one like that should be free."

Mother has twins hours apart in differ countries

A mother has given birth to twins hours apart in two different countries.

Dylan Joseph and Hannah Rose Fox were welcomed into the world in England and Scotland respectively after mum Donna Keenan unexpectedly went into labour and gave birth to her son on her living room floor in Northumberland, North East England, as she had no time to get to the hospital.

Due to the premature birth, paramedics opted to drive Donna to the hospital – located one hour away in Melrose, Scotland – in time for Hannah to be born.

Donna, 28, admitted she is still getting over the "shock" of her speedy delivery.

She is quoted by the Sunday Sun as saying: "I’m still getting over the shock of what’s happened. It’s all such a blur."

50 Burnt Bodies Found in Pastor's Home in Plateau State-NIGERIA

As tension mounts in Plateau State following two incidents of heavy militant killings this weekend, security agents say they have discovered 50 corpses in the burnt home of a pastor in Matse village of Riyom local government area.

The bodies, some of them burnt beyond recognition, were discovered in the home of a pastor of the Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN), and family sources said they belonged to people who ran into the pastor's home for safety as Fulani gunmen surrounded and attacked the area on Saturday morning.

Some 20 persons were killed in nine villages in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of the state on Saturday.

And today, during a mass burial for those victims, gunmen in military uniform attacked mourners, killing many people, including a Senator, a member of the House of Representatives, and Plateau State assemblyman.
The government has imposed a dusk to dawn curfew on the state, while soldiers have been drafted in to ensure order.

Fresh Attacks In Plateau State Kill 22 Persons-The Nation

A woman who lost her husband in the attack

Police evacuates women, children to safe grounds, many residence displaced.

Not less than twenty two persons were reportedly killed in an attack before dawn early Saturday in Gashish District, Barkin Ladi Local government area of Plateau State where nine villages were invaded by unknown gunmen.

The casualties included mostly women, children and the aged. The gunmen were said to have divided themselves into five groups with each group taking on one village.

Eye witness said the gunmen were dressed in bullet-proof vest and army camouflage color. A mobile policeman who is a member of the Special Task Force (STF) was said to have lost his life in the attack.

Source said the police had to evacuate hundreds of women and children from Nyar village for fear of he attackers returning at night. One of the police who would not want to be named said, “What is happening here is beyond our power, we don’t have enough men to protect all the villages, so we have to evacuate people from some villages to the local government headquarters so that we have fewer villages to keep vigil, because we don’t know what may happen at night”

A victim in Barkin Ladi general hospital, Serah Dauda said, “While the attack was on at night, no soldier came for our rescue and they are everywhere in Barkin Ladi, it was the mobile police that came to help the people, this made be suspect the soldier in this very attack”

A man who lost his wife in the attack, Abel Dangyang said, “I don’t see the value of the soldier said to be posted to restore peace, this is frustrating, we sent distress calls to the STF since 4am after our escape, but the soldier never came until the attacker did what they wanted, can you imagine the STF helicopter came to Barkin Ladi by 9:30am long after the attacker had finished their business and fled”

Member representing Barkin Ladi in the Plateau state House of Assembly Hon Gyang Fulani said, “Nine villages in my constituency were attacked simultaneously by unknown gunmen. I’m yet to get any detail from security agencies, but my people told me the gunmen were armed with sophisticated weapons and invaded the people in their sleep. I have confirmed nine people killed in Kakuruk village, another eight were killed in Ruk. These are the ones I saw with my eyes, there could be more, the security agencies will give the confirmed figure because I saw them collecting information right there, though people complain they came too late to the scene.

The combined efforts of the soldiers and the police found it tough to contain violence reaction by youths in the area who set burn fire on main road and were raining causes on members of the STF as not giving them enough protection by preventing such attacks.

UN observers: Syria violence at unprecedented levels

The violence in Syria has reached unprecedented levels, the head of the country's UN observer mission said today, insisting there must be a ceasefire for his teams to resume their work.

About 300 UN monitors were sent to Syria to provide an independent look at the violence, but they have been confined to their hotels since June 15 because of the bloodshed.

"The escalation of violence ... to an unprecedented level, obstructed our ability to observe, verify, report as well as assist in local dialogue," Norwegian Maj Gen Robert Mood told reporters in the Syrian capital Damascus.

More than 14,000 people have been killed since the Syrian uprising began in March 2011, according to activists.

As the conflict grinds on, the violence has become widespread and chaotic. Besides the government crackdown on dissent, rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several massive suicide attacks this year suggest al Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray.

Syria severely restricts the media, making it difficult to gain a credible account of events on the ground.

The president of Cyprus said the island nation has drawn up contingency plans to receive a possible influx of evacuees from Syria if necessary.

Dimitris Christofias said his country is ready to act as an evacuee way station as it did in 2006 when it offered shelter and food to tens of thousands of people who fled Lebanon during a month-long war between Israel and Hezbollah.

More than 200,000 Syrians have so far fled the country overland, seeking refuge in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. Cyprus is only 64 miles (103 kms) west of Syria.

Five killed including gunman in German hostage taking

A gunman killed four hostages in the southwestern German city of Karlsruhe on Wednesday before presumably shooting himself, having barricaded them into his flat.
The man is thought to have been resisting eviction from his attic flat when he carried out the “executions”.
Police said the victims included a court bailiff, a locksmith and a prospective tenant. The alleged gunman, a 53-year-old unemployed man who has not been named, and his girlfriend are believed to be among the dead.

“They all died of gunshot wounds,” said the police spokesman.
At a press conference, police said two of the victims were found on a sofa with their hands tied behind their backs. Both had died from a single shot to the head.
A woman, believed to be the man’s partner, was found dead in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to her chest. The man had also set the flat’s carpet alight.
Germany: 'four dead' in hostage taking 04 Jul 2012

Police found a shotgun, a rifle, two pistols and a dummy hand grenade at the crime scene.
A social worker who had gone to the flat with the victims managed to escape and alert the police after the man had opened fire. She said the gunman had first shot the bailiff in the leg and then wounded the locksmith who had tried to disarm him.
Police came under fire from the heavily barricaded flat. Authorities then sealed off an area around the building, and evacuated a school and a kindergarten.
Negotiators attempted to establish contact with the hostage taker, but it remains unclear what, if any, were his demands.
It also remains to be established the reasons behind what appeared to be a planned attack, although authorities said that the man’s partner was well behind on her rent and was due be evicted that day.
No police were wounded in the incident but a police spokesman said a number of officers had suffered from smoke inhalation, adding that when they burst into the flat the smoke was so thick that they “could not see their hands in front of their eyes”.
Rainer Stickelberger, justice minister for the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, described the attack as an “incomprehensible act” and that he was “deeply shocked by the deaths of five people”.

Three British Soldiers Killed In Afghanistan

The Ministry of Defence announces that UK servicemen have died after a gun battle with a man wearing an Afghan police uniform.
The soldiers, two of whom were serving with the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards and the other who was serving with the Royal Corps of Signals, received first aid at the scene after yesterday's attack but died of their injuries.

They had been working in an Afghan police advisory team.

Their families have been informed and have asked for a 24 hour period of grace before further details are released.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: "This tragic incident again demonstrates the very real risks that our brave soldiers face every day. We will do everything possible to find out how this happened, and learn any lessons for the future."

Major Andrew Cox, chief of staff for Taskforce Helmand, said: "Their loss will be felt deeply across Task Force Helmand. However, this will be nothing compared to the grief experienced by the soldiers' families. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this extremely difficult time."

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: "I was saddened to hear of this cowardly act by a man wearing an Afghan uniform, which has taken the lives of three brave British soldiers."

General Sir David Richards, the UK's chief of the defence staff, said the resolve of the armed forces would be "unshaken" despite the tragedy.

The suspect is in custody, and an investigation is under way.

The shootings happened on the day Afghan National Security Forces took the security lead in southern Afghanistan.

The deaths bring the total number of members of UK forces to have died since operations in the country began in October 2001 to 422.

The attack appears to be the latest in a string of 'green on blue' attacks in which members of the Afghan security or police forces have opened fire on international allies.

Lance Corporal Lee Thomas Davies, 27, from the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, and Corporal Brent John McCarthy, 25, of the Royal Air Force, were shot dead at a patrol base in the Lashkar Gar district of Helmand province by members of the Afghan police force in May.

Sergeant Luke Taylor, 33, of the Royal Marines, and Lance Corporal Michael Foley, 25, of the Adjutant General's Corps, were shot dead by a rogue Afghan soldier at the entrance to the UK headquarters in Lashkar Gar in Helmand Province in March.

Drinking Tea 'Increases Cancer Risk'

Drinking large amounts of tea could increase the risk of prostate cancer, research suggests.

Scientists found that more than seven cups a day raised the chances of men developing the disease by 50%.

But whether the link is causal or due to coincidence is still unknown.

Study leader Dr Kashif Shafique, from the Institute of Health and Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow said: "Most previous research has shown either no relationship with prostate cancer for black tea or some preventive effect of green tea.

"We don't know whether tea itself is a risk factor or if tea drinkers are generally healthier and live to an older age when prostate cancer is more common anyway."

The Scottish researchers tracked the health of more than 6,000 men aged between 21 and 75, over a period of 37 years.

Participants provided information about their tea, coffee and alcohol consumption, smoking habits and general health.

Just under a quarter of the men were heavy tea drinkers. Of these, 6.4% developed prostate cancer during the course of the study.

Those drinking more than seven cups of tea a day were 50% more at risk than those who drank no tea or up to three cups.

The findings are reported in the journal Nutrition and Cancer.

Dr Shafique added: "We found that heavy tea drinkers were more likely not to be overweight, be non-alcohol drinkers and have healthy cholesterol levels.

"However, we did adjust for these differences in our analysis and still found that men who drank the most tea were at greater risk of prostate cancer."

Each year almost 41,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer and around 11,000 die from the disease.

Men taking part in the study were drinking traditional black tea rather than green tea, which has been shown to have anti-cancer properties.

Black tea contains far fewer flavanols, protective plant chemicals, than green tea. But the researchers said they knew of no ingredient in black tea that might promote prostate cancer. Drinking large quantities of tea had no link to more aggressive forms of the disease.

Police Avert Deadly Bomb Explosions In Jos

Two bombs planted Saturday on a bridge in Riyom, some 40 kilometres from Jos, the Plateau capital, have been detonated, the state police command have said.

Spokesman of the command, Abu Emmanuel, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos, that the bombs were planted on the bridge linking Gol-Hoss and Riyom, the headquarters of Riyom Local Government Area.

"Today, at about 0200 hours, suspected terrorists went and planted bombs on a bridge linking Gol-Hoss and the headquarters of Riyom Local Government Area.

"Following a tip-off, a Police anti-bomb squad led by ASP Abel Mbibi, went to the scene and we were able to detonate and evacuate the bombs,” Mr. Emmanuel told NAN.

Mr. Emmanuel said the detonation of the bombs was done without any damage to the bridge and that no casualty was recorded during the operation.

The spokesman said that no arrest had been made in connection with the incident but that investigation had commenced.
